What it is
Base44 is an AI app builder in the Lovable mold: describe the app in chat and it generates a working product with user accounts, a database, integrations and hosting already wired up, no separate Supabase project to manage. It became briefly famous in mid-2025 when Wix acquired it for 80 million dollars while it was still a bootstrapped eight-person company.
Everything runs on message credits. Each instruction you send while building consumes them, so the practical cost of an app depends on how many iterations it takes you to get there, which is worth understanding before committing to a tier.
Who it is for
Non-technical builders who want the batteries-included version of vibe coding, and who would rather have auth and data solved for them than assemble the stack themselves. Power users who want to own the code and infrastructure will be happier with Lovable or Bolt, which also dominate it in our AI-recommendation index.

Base44 is a competent, cheap way to get a working app with the boring parts pre-solved. But the AI assistants that increasingly route buyers barely mention it, and the credit model punishes tinkering. Try the free tier; graduate to Lovable if you outgrow it.
Where it earns its keep
- +Auth, database and hosting included with zero setup
- +Cheapest paid entry point among the AI app builders
- +Wix ownership means it is unlikely to vanish
Where it falls short
- −Credit metering makes iteration-heavy builds unpredictable
- −Barely registers with AI assistants: 3 recommendations in 160 August answers
- −Less control over code and infrastructure than Lovable or Bolt
